Un’agiografia in chiave moderna, un viaggio, una lettura per certi aspetti nuova, della vita di sante illustri ridisegnate da 10 illustratrici autorevoli nel panorama del design moderno.
Nelle loro rappresentazioni oggetto di indagine e di interesse diventa lo strumento per mezzo del quale la donna umana ha raggiunto la sfera di santità. Legame questo forte e indissolubile che porta la santa ad essere protettrice del mestiere che l’oggetto in esame rappresenta.
La loro interpretazione assume una chiave di lettura laica, separata e distante dall’aurea mistica che un’opera del genere presupporrebbe.
E per questa ragione le rappresentazioni iconografiche possono raggiungere tagli pop, come nel caso della Santa Dorotea, illustrata da Olimpia Zagnoli.
Oppure può accadere che la santa sparisca dalla rappresentazione e che rimanga presente solo l’oggetto santificato come elemento da adorare, come nell’esempio di Santa Apollonia reso da Nathalie du Pasquier. Qui le pinze con le quali sono state strappati i denti alla martire capeggiano in primo piano come oggetto di culto.

Ogni rappresentazione iconografica è preceduta da una breve nota biografica sulla santa.
Alla fine troviamo un’intervista alle illustratrici in cui si indaga la motivazione che vede il culto delle sante cosi radicate in Italia; cosa le ha principalmente inspirate e come si spiega il legame fra l’oggetto, strumento e la santa.
Fra le rappresentazioni la mia preferita è quella di Santa Caterina di Alessandria di Anna+Elena= Balbusso. L’illustrazione è molto vicina a quelle della tradizione, ma ripulita da simboli religiosi evidenti. Gli oggetti della sua tortura, la ruota dentata e la spada, ricorrenti nell’ iconografia tradizionale sono qui interpretate e , e in questo caso le illustratrice le hanno rese in senso più moderno.
Libro bilingue, piccolo e dalle dimensioni tascabili, ma potente nell’impatto visivo. Un’idea originale che consente ai credenti di avere una lettura più moderna della tradizione, e ai laici di avvicinarsi aduna sfera di conoscenza nuova.
