“L’Anima della Frontiera” di Matteo Righetto, Edizioni Mondadori
Ambientato in Alta Valdibrenta, fra l’altipiano di Asiago e il massiccio del Grappa nel 1888, “L’anima della Frontiera” narra delle vicende dei De Boer, contadini poveri che cercano di sbarcare il lunario con la coltivazione del tabacco.
Augusto, capostipite della famiglia, si rende ben presto conto che ha solo un modo per garantire ai suoi cari la sopravvivenza, ovvero il contrabbando. Decide per tale ragione di sottrarre dalla sua produzione, qualche sacco di tabacco che nasconde ai funzionari del Re e che utilizza come merce di scambio con i minatori oltre la frontiera, per del rame e argento. Ad aiutarlo nella sua impresa la figlia primogenita, Jole, protagonista del romanzo di Righetto.
Molti gli elementi che mi hanno colpita. Incominciando dal titolo
“L’Anima della Frontiera”
punto nevralgico, luogo in cui si articolano le vicende e dove i personaggi si sviluppano. La frontiera come limite fisico da valicare ma anche psicologico; mezzo attraverso il quale si può aspirare ad una vita migliore, ma che, allo stesso tempo, può togliere tutto. La frontiera che separa gli uomini di paesi diversi ma appartenenti alla medesima classe sociale (i contadini e i minatori); che separa uomini dello stesso paese ma di classi sociali diverse (i contadini e i funzionari del re). La frontiera coprotagonista e antagonista nell’intera vicenda.
Interessante la commistione di generi letterari che si fondono perfettamente all’interno del libro e che rendono agile la narrazione.
Potrebbe definirsi un romanzo storico dal gusto un po’ patriottico. Potrebbe essere una saga familiare. Ma più di tutto, a mio avviso, è un romanzo di formazione, un “bildungsromance”, nel corso del quale assistiamo alla metamorfosi, allo sviluppo della protagonista.
La Jole si trova infatti a dover sopperire alla mancanza del padre partito per una missione oltre frontiera e non più ritornato.
Nonostante tutto, non solo non crede alla presunta morte del padre, ma per di più si veste dei suoi panni, diventando essa stessa contrabbandiera e prodigandosi nella sua ricerca. Donna emancipata e volitiva riveste i suoi panni e lo sostituisce nel ruolo di capostipite all’interno della famiglia.
Sa che da lei dipende il sostentamento della famiglia e nonostante la giovane età e l’appartenenza al genere femminile (che la rendono quindi maggiormente esposta ai pericoli della frontiera), si fa carico di queste responsabilità.

insomma, che in sella al suo destriero e con il suo fucile, battezzato San Paolo, sfida anche le convenzioni sociali, che vedono la donna relegata al solo ruolo di moglie e madre.
Molto forte il legame con il padre, magistralmente descritto nel corso del libro, unione questa fra padre e figlia, presente in modo se non unico ma sicuramente raro, all’interno della produzione letteraria.
La scrittura di Righetto è molto asciutta ma non per questo povera. Sa cogliere quelli che sono gli elementi importanti della narrazione e li mette a fuoco, senza troppe digressioni, concentrando in questo modo anche l’attenzione e le energie del lettore.
Libro che consiglio assolutamente sì, a tutti, in grado di soddisfare i gusti e il palato di un pubblico ampio ed eterogeneo. E poi si parla di montagna anche e quindi, perché no?
