Definirei il romanzo di Michele Marzani una storia nella storia… Anzi una storia nella storia dentro alla storia.
Pablita O’Connor è una donna forte e volitiva. Una di quelle donne che nella vita ha imparato ad essere anche un po’ uomo, a cavarsela sempre contando sulle proprie forze.
Chiuso il negozio di esche per pesca, che ha gestito fino ad età matura, decide di partire, di affrontare un viaggio che la condurrà a ritroso nella storia di suo padre, il partigiano Malachy, in cerca di risposte di cui sente il bisogno.
Malachy O’Connor, irlandese di nascita, decise di arruolarsi come partigiano nella guerra civile spagnola, da dove fuggì via mare, approdando a Ventotene e quindi nelle valli delle Alpi piemontesi, ove mise su famiglia e concluse la sua vita.
Molti gli interrogativi che Pablita si pone e che in qualche modo non la fanno sentire completa.
Ed è partendo dalle valli in cui è nata e cresciuta che inizia la sua avventura, andando anche contro la volontà di sua figlia Anna, che non comprende e non giustifica questa necessità che la madre sente.
Un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo e nello spazio, nei luoghi in cui passò il partigiano O’Connor alla ricerca della verità, ma quale verità?
Ben presto al viaggio fisico si affianca quello più intimo, personale della protagonista, che scopre aspetti di sé di cui era completamente ignara.
E da queste due esperienze che vive in parallelo, otterrà delle risposte che faranno mettere in discussione sia la figura di suo padre, che se stessa.
Ma Pablita subisce solo in parte le conseguenze delle scoperte che fa, facendosi essa stessa artefice della sua trasformazione. Sono soprattutto le figure femminili, con cui entra in contatto nel corso della storia, ad essere le leve della sua mutazione: Anna, la figlia; Pablita, l’altra, la spagnola; Elisabeth, la proprietaria del B&B in Irlanda.
Man mano che si procede nella lettura la figura di Pablita acquisisce spessore e guadagna complessità.
Il romanzo, come la protagonista, acquisisce forza e vigore e si ha la sensazione che non si tratti più di personaggi, ma molto più probabilmente di persone.
L’aggettivo che utilizzerei per descrivere il romanzo di Marziani è forte.
Due sono i messaggi che lancia: nella vita mai dare nulla per scontato perché non sempre la realtà è come appare. Ma soprattutto non credere mai di essere arrivati, mai avere delle certezze neppure in merito a noi stessi. Tutto è in divenire e anche noi come tutto del resto, siamo soggetti a mutazioni e cambiamenti in modo costante, sempre, indipendentemente dal sesso e dall’età.
