buon libraio ed esperto fotografo, mi ha consigliato il libro Edward Weston edito da Taschen, ha inconsapevolmente innescato in me un nuovo meccanismo, una nuova rivoluzione.

L’opera di Weston (1886-1958), è oggettivamente ragguardevole: ha operato una spaccatura all’interno della corrente che, nel periodo del suo operato, influiva maggiormente in fotografia: il pittorialismo.

Il pittorialismo tende a rappresentare la natura come un esempio di purezza e verità, contrapposta ad una società dalla quale gli artisti esponenti prendono le distanze.

Ed è questo il punto da cui parte Weston che per le sue fotografie predilige l’effetto flou,  ovvero lo sfocato artistico, quasi a rendere la realtà circostante come se fosse immersa in un’atmosfera onirica e romantica.

Ma ben presto Weston opera una revisione del suo lavoro ed inizia a dare un senso più reale e concreto a ciò che fotografa.

Questo è il risultato delle amicizie strette con alcuni esponenti del Rinascimento Messicano e dell’influsso delle avanguardie europee.

Modernismo, ma soprattutto cubismo inflienzano il modo in cui attraverso la fotografia Weston rappresenta al realtà, in modo semplice, nitido e a fuoco.

È il periodo in cui fonda insieme con altri, il gruppo f/24, chiamato così per l’apertura minima di diaframma degli obbiettivi impiegati, di modo da conferire una maggior profondità di campo.

La fotografia doveva cogliere l’essenza atemporale del soggetto come forma pura, perfetta, contrapposta allo sfondo. E si tramuta così in simbolo, in metafora visiva.

ben presto sviluppa una sua particolare visione fotografica. Si definiva fotografo diretto, alla ricerca della quintessenza delle cose.

E gli americani amarono molto Weston e il suo operato, così lontano dallo stereotipo della fotografia intesa come arte. Il suo occhio vede un’America obbiettiva, fatta di luoghi desolati, pianure fangose e fattorie desolate.

Una messa in scena non rassicurante ma diretta e onesta.

Nella monografia in tre lingue, edita da Taschen troviamo un excursus di quelle che sono le opere più rappresentative del fotografo: nudi, studi sulla natura e prospettive sul paesaggio californiano. Giochi dl luce e ombre, di linee, di bianco, nero e di tutte le tonalità di grigio.

Interessanti, a mio avviso e da profana, le fotografie realizzate da Weston ai peperoni, che tutto sembrano fuorché dei semplici ortaggi.

Bella la realizzazione delle forme, delle linee morbide e il gioco di chiaroscuri, che fa sembrare i peperoni come coperti di metallo liquido.

Nelle fotografie realizzate ad alcuni nudi è eccezionale il modo in cui i corpi non sembrano più essere tali, ma solo linee geometriche che si distaccano dallo sfondo scuro.
